Lga 771 overclock

Does anyone know hat is the best LGA 771 Xeon?

We are doing an experiment and I know LGA 771 CPU's are cheap so can someone help me?

It is a dual CPU board. If overclocking, lower FSB makes overclocking easier, because boards often max out before the CPUs do with high FSB chips.

There's a performance difference, but it's not huge. I would suggest not going with 771. Core 2 era cpus are about to get to the point where they go directly to the trash. The 1366 xeons are very cheap as well and the dell t3500 has been quite a favorite. You'd spend more trying to get components separately. Intel Xeon e5410. It's cheap and should serve your purpose. I'd recommend getting an used one if you can since there is no point buy these new. How about this?

What Xeon is better?

X series, W series or E series.

I'm going to see what the motherboard compatibility list says.

The list says it supports x, w and e series. Those refer to TDP. X series draws the most power, makes the most heat, and the upper-end X CPUs have the highest clocks.

At the same clockspeed, an "E" CPU with a lower TDP is better. it looks like the best one is a Xeon X5492 but they are 100$ each.

The Xeon X5460 is cheap so I might go for that. I know they produce lots of heat but I g ot a good cooler on it.

Do you think 2 of these will work good with a GTX 1060? In many modern games, it will struggle, regardless of what video card you have. For $20 it's hard to find something better, but it's a very low-end CPU that may not even meet the minimum requirements of some games. wow that post timing,
I just bought one Xeon X5460 for $25 for mod lga 771 to 775.                                 Ecky :                                             In many modern games, it will struggle, regardless of what video card you have. But if can overclock to 4Ghz it will help alot in games.
I know but the most demanding game I will be playing is star citizen and no mans sky.

I don't know if I will be able to overclock because it already has a huge TDP. Those two games are very light on your CPU, but even so you'll not be able to stay consistently above 60fps, regardless of your video card. It's a lot to expect of a CPU that's ~8+ years old and little more than the cost of fast food for two. The X5460 will draw a lot of power and generate a lot of heat as well, since 150W it's too high. You can get the E5410 and overclock it to gain better performance and still it won't draw and generate that much power and heat. Remember that there will be 2 CPU's.

I was looking at the Xeon E5472 which is cheap and just a tiny bit weaker than the X5460.
It's not a matter of thread count, the single-threaded performance of these CPUs is mostly what will hold you back. ok, so should I go for 2 Xeon X5460 or 2 Xeon E5472? I would recommend going for E5472. The E5472 has a higher FSB as well and the same amount of L2 cache as X5460. On these processors the FSB speed made a lot of difference. If overclocking, lower FSB makes overclocking easier, because boards often max out before the CPUs do with high FSB chips.

There's a performance difference, but it's not huge.
