Nhưng bạn đang bị đánh lừa rồi, vế thứ 2 "Fruit flies like a banana" khi đọc sẽ được tách làm 2 nhịp "Fruit flies/ like a banana" - Những con ruồi giấm/ thích chuối.

"Flies" trong "Time flies like an arrow" là động từ, có nghĩa là "bay", 

"Flies" trong "fruit flies like a banana" là danh từ, có nghĩa là "con ruồi", "fruit flies" là những con ruồi dấm.

Câu này là một sự chơi chữ đầy thú vị trong Tiếng Anh, dùng để nói về sự mơ hồ: Thời gian thấm thoát thoi đưa.

Tại sao lại xếp 2 danh từ đi liền nhau trong một câu mà không có động từ, người đàn ông già chiếc thuyền?

Thực ra trong câu này, man không phải là danh từ mà là động từ, nó có nghĩa là "vận hành": Người già vận hành con thuyền.

Phải chăng bạn đang nghĩ việc xếp 2 từ Read cạnh nhau trong câu là hoàn toàn sai. Nhưng câu này lại đúng chính xác, nó bắt nguồn từ cách đọc khác nhau của từ Read. 

Nếu là Read danh từ sẽ đọc là: /riːd/.

Nhưng khi nó là Read động từ, ở thì quá khứ, sẽ đọc là: /re:d/.

Read là một động từ bất qui tắc, ở thì hiện tại hay quá khứ đều là read.

Như vậy, câu trên có nghĩa là: "Đôi khi tôi đọc từ "read" như là /red/ dù đáng nhẽ nó nên được đọc là /riːd/" hoặc ngược lại "Đôi khi tôi đọc từ "read" như là /riːd/ dù đáng nhẽ nó nên được đọc là /red/".

Những ví dụ trên trong Tiếng Anh gọi là "garden-path" - những  câu đúng chính xác về mặt ngữ pháp nhưng người đọc sẽ được dẫn dắt để nghĩ là câu đấy đang sai, họ bị đi vào ngõ cụt hoặc rất mờ hồ về ý nghĩa của câu mình đang đọc.

Vì vậy, học Tiếng Anh, bạn phải thực sự tỉnh táo!
