Groundstrokes The Wilson 6.1 95S, despite being built from one of the most popular molds in the industry, takes some time to get used to. The 18x16 string pattern launches the ball higher than frames without Spin Effect technology, and the 95 square inch head size requires solid technique and coordination. After a few sessions, I found the frame to really enhance certain aspects of my play, including my baseline game. The 95S provided plenty of spin and depth of both forehand and backhand wings. The open pattern also helped power the ball on flat shots, including offensive drives and defensive blocks. The frame felt fast on challenging serve returns, yet still provided enough heft and stability to keep the ball deep in my opponent’s court.

Volleys The mass and stiffness in the hoop allow for plenty of power, especially on offensive volleys. I was able to send the ball deep with tons of pace and weight, or drive the ball through the sideline for a short-angle winner. Shots felt crisp and easy, allowing me to easily maintain control of the point. Touch shots took a little more time to master, but I was eventually able to hit drop shots and drop volleys with the proper height and backspin. I really enjoyed the extra dwell time of the ball on the strings that the 18’16 pattern provides.

Serves Again, the mass and stiffness in the hoop contributed to the easy power I was able to find with the open string pattern. The distribution of mass, as well as the balance of the frame, worked well with my stroke mechanics, so I didn’t need to make many adjustments to make the serve work. Like with many of the extremely open patterned frames, flat serves seemed to have a little extra boost thanks to the enhanced trampoline effect. Spin serves were just as offensive, as I was able to accurately hit targets with both slice and kick. I didn’t notice a huge difference in the amount of movement on my spin serves in comparison to my regular frame, but there was definitely more power.

Overall Though it took some time to get used to the frame, the Wilson Six.One 95S lives up to the promise of a player’s frame with increased spin potential. Fans of the Six.One series should certainly give the 95S a try, as should players looking for help in producing a heavier, topspin ball without having to move to a larger headsize. This frame is best suited for 4.0 level players and up.
