Faculty and staff can connect two external Dell Type-C monitors to a Dell laptop.

Overview: Cables and Ports

Each box should contain a power cable, a Type-C cable, and a Display Port cable. To connect both monitors, you will need the power plug for each, one Type-C cable, and one DisplayPort cable.

Type-C

The Type-C cable is a thinner cable, with a small oval connector on each end. You can click on the image below to enlarge it:

Monitor Ports

The monitor ports will look similar to the following picture, although the order may be different depending on which model you have.

Connecting the Monitors

To connect both monitors to a Dell laptop,

  1. Connect a power cable into each monitor.
  2. Turn the power on.
  3. Connect one end of the Type-C cable to the Type-C port on the laptop.

  4. Connect the other end to the Type-C port of the first monitor.

  5. Remove the orange plug from the first monitor, This is the port that will send the signal out to the second monitor.

  6. Plug one end of the DisplayPort cable into it.

  7. Do not remove the orange plug from the second monitor. Connect the other end of the DisplayPort cable into the Display Port's In port. The setup process will then be complete.

Connecting to Ethernet

To connect the monitor to Ethernet, you will need a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter.Plug it into one of the rear or side USB 3.0 ports on the first monitor (the ports colored blue inside).

The USB ports on the second monitor will NOT be active or usable. You will only be able to use the USB ports on the first monitor. There are usually on the two ports side and two underneath where the other ports are located.
