Not sure what this blogger said is true, but worth entertaining.

I know you've owned a 2020 AND 2021 Kia Telluride. And like almost all who have bought or driven one it's a game changing vehicle and it's hard not to love.

ESPECIALLY, wearing the 'murdered out' Nightfall Edition.

It's a good looking vehicle all around but that added pop the nightfall gives it makes the Telluride truly shine.

That is why EVERYONE is asking WHY would Kia not offer that on the new and improved 2023 product?

It's a no-brainer right? You DON'T mess with success.

Well, the REAL answer you wouldn't expect was revealed to me today at a dealer luncheon where the LOBSTERS are PLENTIFUL.

The exact reason why it went bye-bye (temporarily I'm told) is simple.

The black anodized parts KIA waas sourcing turned out to be an issue with quality. In many parts of the country they have been having issues 'PITTING'.

So Kia decided to fire the supplier and is in the process of finding a new vendor that will make better ones.

Once they do, a Nightfall-like Edition will re-appear.

I agree, but believe that to be common sense. I believed that from the moment I heard, based solely on the number of reports here on this forum. Something had to give.

Not sure I agree with what happened. There are a ton of companies that do anodizing and can do it well. They probably weren’t making enough profit from the add on and rather than price it out of the market preferred to drop the option. The anodizers have too much work right now to keep up with the demand and the auto market has slim profits.

?? Anodized ??

I‘ve never taken a close look at those trim pieces, but I’d assumed that they’re steel. I had always thought that anodizing is a process used on non ferrous metals, e.g. aluminum.

Is there an analogous process for steel?

You can’t anodize steel.

What makes you believe Kia wasn't making a lot of profit on the Nightfall package? Auto appearance packages typically have very high margins, since they usually don't add functional equipment, but merely provide aesthetic variants of equipment that's already there. In other words, they are probably as close to "pure profit" as any option the consumer can order. On the Telluride SX in particular, the Nightfall package replaces one set of black 20" wheels with a different set of black 20" wheels (same size tire, so no extra expense there), then changes the finish of various trim pieces. Do you think the actual cost to Kia of all that is anywhere close to $1.4k?

On the EX, the Nightfall specs call for slightly different tires, but Nightfall on an EX requires the prior purchase of the Premium Package, which upgrades the wheels from 18" to 20". Since Nightfall also includes wheels, arguably an EX buyer is paying for two wheel upgrades, which are probably at least partially redundant.

Now, a malfunctioning appearance package is another matter. It might create headaches for the manufacturer that it would rather not deal with.

Yeah, I'm sure any profit from the NF package was already baked in before the Telluride was even available.

Costs for metals anodizing has increased significantly due to shortages in raw materials and chemicals. That’s a fact. Outside supplier profits have dwindled down due to increased costs. Suppliers to the auto industry make minimal margins overall.

But your suggestion was that KIA has dropped Nightfall due to low profitability: "They probably weren’t making enough profit from the add on and rather than price it out of the market preferred to drop the option." Whether the suppliers have low margins is a different question (in fact, the lower the margins of the suppliers, obviously the better off Kia is financially).

The only parts that could even remotely be anodized are window trim pieces; the roof rails are painted and the other pieces are plastic (grille, "skid plates", lower door trim bars). I can see those window trim pieces being the source of headaches, as that's the only part that's been failing. But there's no way Kia isn't making money on providing different color parts and a few potentially anodized pieces for $1400.

For 2023 yes, in a way. They wrapped the NF package into the new X-Line trim. You cannot get NF as a standalone package.

Getting my NightFall Telluride in the next week. Are there still issues with the trim on the newer builds? Are we seeing less. Wondering what to expect.

If there was a widespread consistent problem, I'd expect they'd stop offering it as an option on current production.

They didn't... so I too am suspicious of that reasoning.

We ordered a 2023 just because they had the nightfall edition, it looks so sleek and good looking. Chrome pieces look so weird now on cars. Paint Matched/gloss black is the new sexy. I dont get why they would remove that and go BACKWARDS.

I don't understand your comment, since Nightfall has been dropped from the 2023's. Do you mean that you ordered a 2022?

"New sexy" = latest fad.
