The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be the 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international men's football championship of Asia organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It will be held from 16 June to 16 July 2023. The tournament will involve 24 national teams after its expansion of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, including that of the host nation, assuming the current format of the finals is maintained. Qatar are the defending champions. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in China. However, on 14 May 2022, the AFC announced that China would not be able to host the tournament due to the circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and China's Zero-COVID policy. Host selectionThe first bidding involved four countries which expressed interests in hosting the tournament: China, Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand. Later on, the other three countries: South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand, all withdrew for various reasons, thus China was announced as the winning bid on 4 June 2019, on the eve of the 69th FIFA Congress in Paris, France. On their initial bid, China selected 12 venues in different cities for this tournament. However, due to their Zero-COVID policy, China later announced their withdrawal as the host of 2023 Asian Cup. Therefore, the second round of bidding will be decided by the AFC later, with the deadline being scheduled on 30 June 2022. South Korea was the first country to announce its bid for the second session on 20 June 2022. QualificationMain article: 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualificationThe first two rounds of qualification also served as the Asian qualification for the World Cup. Qatar participated in the second round only for qualification to the 2023 Asian Cup, as they qualified automatically for the World Cup as host nation. China participated in the second round only for qualification to the 2022 World Cup, as they had initially qualified automatically for the Asian Cup as host nation. Timor-Leste was barred from participating in the qualification tournament after being found to have fielded a total of twelve ineligible players in 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification matches, among other competitions. However, as FIFA have not barred them from the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Timor-Leste are still allowed to enter the competition, but they are ineligible to qualify for the Asian Cup. Qualifying began on 6 June 2019 for 23 spots joining the host nation China. The tournament will take place in June and July 2023, moved from the typical January/February scheduling of the AFC Asian Cup due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which will take place in November and December 2022. North Korea withdrew from the qualifying round due to safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Japan became the first team to qualify, by defeating Myanmar 10–0. Hong Kong qualified for the Asian Cup for the first time after 55 years, since 1968, which represents the longest drought in AFC Asian Cup history. Tajikistan made their debut in the Asian Cup, while fellow CAFA member nations, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan, were the only two nations from the Central Asian zone which failed to qualify for the tournament. All 16 teams of the 2007 edition qualified for this tournament, with co-hosts Indonesia and Malaysia qualifying for the first time since. Kuwait and Yemen were the only two West Asian teams not to qualify for the final tournament. Similarly to 2019, India remained the only South Asian team to qualify for the tournament, and it was also the first time that India qualified for two consecutive AFC Asian Cup. The Philippines, North Korea, Turkmenistan, and Yemen are the only teams who had competed the previous edition that won't participate in this edition, while the AFF had, for the first time, five nations participating in the competition (Australia also participated in the 2007 edition but had not joined the AFF), a record for the region.
