Do any of you full frame Nikon shooters have this lens or have used it in the past (on full frame digital)? I'm interested in this as a general purpose lens for the Nikon Df because this lens is pretty small but has a useful focal length range. It would keep the Df overall package pretty small. I've looked for sample photos and reviews for this lens and I've seen some of that already. It seems there are no big complaints about it and it's a good performer overall. An example of a general purpose lens that I really enjoyed and thought had great image quality (for the type of lens it was) is the Nikon 28-300 for full frame. Compared to the 28-300, how would you say the optical quality is for the 28-105?

Keep in mind, I do know there are better options out there but I like this one because of its size, zoom range and price. I'm just curious if anyone here has used it on full frame and were pretty happy with the results. Also if you have some sample photos to share, that would be great (please share what camera model it was used on if EXIF info it stripped from the file).

Thanks

I had one on my D600 and loved it, but sold it for a 24-85 VR. Here is an album of images I took with this lens on a D600.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/59469254@N03/sets/72157648241180170/

Good points

1. It is sharp in the center

2. Very low distortion

3. Also acts as a 1:2 Macro from 50-105mm

4. Good built though the macro switch is fiddly

Not so good points

1. Corners have some lens uniformity

2. No VR - if you plan to use it as a walk around in dim conditions, this can be an issue without tripod

3. Low contrast compared to 24-85 VR (requires more levels and curves adjustments than 24-85 VR)

I switched to Nikon 24-85 VR for the VR, better contrast and color, slightly better sharpness and better resolution for the 24 Mpx sensor.

I don't regret selling it as I find the 24-85 better in all respects aside from the extra reach of 105mm and bad distortion on the 24-85 (can be corrected with a click in LR and CNX2)

Thanks. The large photos are very helpful. I did have the 24-85vr with my old D600 and I was happy with the optical quality of that lens, but I was looking at the 28-105 for it's small size, classic look and very useful zoom range for my Df.

I had the 28-105 for a long time and found it to be a great lens. It also has a very close focus which is useful.

As another poster said the 24-85 is superior and wider and I use that now and sold my 28-105.

Its a very solid well built lens.

I found this lens a fine travel lens on D700, so I imagine it would be adequate at 16MB also. Based on comments I have sometimes read from others, some examples of this lens may be worse than others. When one hears the 'low contrast' criticism, one wonders if the lenshood was being used? The front element is recessed very little and use of a lenshood is recommended.

A great value and a solid performer

I've owned a pair of the 28-105 lenses for many years. It was my primary walk-around lens on my last film camera (F100) as well as my first FX camera (D700). And I still use it from time to time on my D800e. As you and others have pointed out, it is relatively small and light, has a very usable macro capability and produces respectably sharp images throughout its range.

I think it would be a great match for a DF body. And even though I have newer lenses in this range, I have no intention of giving up my 28-105.

I add two photos taken with the 28-105 (serial number US 297937) on my D700. Please ignore the artistic value or rather the lack thereof. I just wanted to show the lens's ability to "look into" the sun and its wide angle behaviour. This is not exhaustive and I do not have the expertise to say that these pictures are characteristic. Just my contribution of 2 pics.

I do not remember why I used ISO 1600, maybe this was handheld?

LENS HOOD QUESTION (for this lens)

In reply to D200_4me • Feb 3, 2015

Ok, I've seen the recommended hood for this lens and honestly, it looks a little unusual the way it flares out and is not very nice to look at, to say the least Has anyone ever used an alternative hood with this lens like maybe one of the petal type hoods or a simple round hood? Something that looks more traditional but something that also doesn't interfere with the lens (vignetting, shows up in the image, etc)? Thanks

Try the HB-27. This is what most users use instead of the hood that comes with the lens. The HB-27 is for the 28-100 lens, but fits and works fine on the 28-105.

Thank you. I just got the lens in the mail yesterday afternoon. I need to do a lot more shooting to get a good impression of it, but so far in the center it does seem pretty sharp and looks good. It does appear to have more vignetting than I was expecting, but that's not too hard to deal with (although, unfortunately Lightroom doesn't have a lens profile for this lens). It was dirt cheap so even if it's not a great, great performer, it's not a big loss and I can't feel bad about it ....but my hope was that it would be at least somewhat similar to the Nikon 28-300 in optical quality because I honestly really enjoyed that lens. I don't want to use something as big as that on the Df though (28-300). Maybe I'll eventually just give in and buy the lens I thought I might use all along with the Df (for a small, lightweight zoom with reasonable focal range)....the 24-85mm VR.

For now, I need to get out and shoot more with the 28-105 to get a better feel for it and learn how to edit the file to get the look I want. I did quickly test the macro capability and you can indeed get really close with it so that's nice. How you get the lens into macro mode it a little fiddly though because of how you have to have the lens in the correct focal length and focus point before you can move the macro switch.

Hoods for zoom lenses are actually quite silly when you really think about it. The only effective protection they provide against incoming light is at the widest zoom setting. At other focal lengths they might help protect the front element somewhat, but they also get in the way of rotating a circular polarizing filter.

With my 28-105 (and most other zooms) I simply use my hand or a hat to shade the front of the lens from the sun or other bright light sources.

A lens profile for raw files is available using the "Adobe Lens Profile Downloader".

I tried the 28-105 using a D810. Sharpness was ok for me - I'd rate it a good kit lens. In my view there was only one drawback: the lens produced CA to a too high degree.

I normally use the hoods solely for some extra protection (in case I swing around and accidentally bump the front of the lens on something).

Picked up the 28-105 on ebay, focus was kinda soft and would get stuck in macro mode (yes I know how to put it in and take it out of macro). Returned it, found one in near mint condition on ebay that was also a later year production, and it is sharper. Sweet spot for sharpness seems to be between 40-85mm. A good all purpose walk around on my D600, and in a pinch, can use it as a macro. For $150, a steal.
