Cáp viễn thông là tên gọi chung chỉ cáp đồng và cáp quang được dùng để truyền thông tin trong mạng viễn thông thuộc quản lý chuyên ngành của Bộ Bưu chính, Viễn thông.
Các loại cáp viễn thông
1/ Cáp xoắn đôi
Cáp xoắn đôi là loại cáp gồm nhiều cặp sợi dây đồng xoắn lại với nhau nhằm chống phát xạ nhiễu điện từ từ bên ngoài, hay từ sự phát xạ của loại cáp UTP và sự xuyên âm giữa những cặp liền kề.
Cáp xoắn có thể làm giảm nhiểu vì hai dây chỉ truyền một đường tín hiệu, biểu diễn bằng hiệu điện thế giữa hay dây này. Khi nhiễu đánh vào, hai dây xoắn vào nhau nên sẽ xem như bị nhiễu giống nhau, cùng tăng hoặc cùng giảm một điện áp nhất định. Hiệu điện thế giữa hai dây vẫn giữ nguyên nên dữ liệu truyền vẫn đúng.
Có hai loại cáp xoắn đôi được sử dụng rộng rãi trong LAN đó là: loại có vỏ bọc chống nhiễu [STP] và loại không có vỏ bọc chống nhiễu [UTP]
a/ Cáp UTP
Cáp UTP tuy không có vỏ bọc chống nhiễu nhưng bù lại có độ bền cao. Cáp UTP có nhiều cặp xoắn như cáp STp nhưng không có lớp vỏ bạc chống nhiễu. Cáp xoắn đôi trần sử dụng chuẩn 10BaseT hoặc 100BaseT. Do không có vỏ bọc chống nhiễu nên thông thường được dùng để đi dây trong nhà. Đầu nối sử dụng đầu RJ 45. Cáp UTP có 5 loại:
