Will the 2023 Ranger have a diesel?

With the debut of the second-generation Ford Ranger Raptor, the Blue Oval’s performance division mid-sized pick-up truck has been earmarked to feature both the headlining 3.0 litre turbocharged petrol V6 engine as well as the 2.0 litre biturbo-diesel unit that serves elsewhere in the Ranger line-up.

“The V6 petrol was always the motor for the [Ranger] Raptor for this generation of the vehicle, but [we recognise] there will still be customers that want the [economy of diesel fuel]. And so, the other end of the bandwidth the biturbo four-cylinder diesel in some markets is actually going to continue,” said Ford Ranger Raptor chief programme engineer Dave Burn.

“Not in Australia, but for some markets where a V6 isn’t appropriate, the biturbo four-cylinder diesel will continue,” Burn continued, referring to the 2.0 litre biturbo diesel that makes 213 PS and 500 Nm.

For reference, the 3.0 litre turbocharged petrol V6 engine in the Ranger Raptor produces 397 PS at 5,650 rpm and 583 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm, mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive.

Thailand also gets the 3.0 litre V6 version of the Ranger Raptor, so there might be a chance that Malaysia might get the more powerful V6 version instead of the four cylinder diesel.

Which would you prefer in the Malaysian spec Ranger Raptor – the V6 petrol or the four pot diesel?

Ford Australia answered the call for more power with a twin-turbo V6 petrol Ford Ranger Raptor. For now, there is no diesel offered locally – even though it’s available in other markets. Here’s why.

Ford says there are no plans to introduce a diesel version of the Ford Ranger Raptor with the arrival of the new model – but the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder version is ‘on the shelf’ as the vehicle will be sold in that guise overseas.

Ford Australia says it has been working on the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol Ford Ranger Raptor since 2018 – not long after the first Ranger Raptor went on sale with the twin-turbo 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder engine.

In response to complaints it was underpowered, Ford doubled down and found the most grunt it could get its hands on – the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine from the Ford Explorer ST sold in North America.

However, to reduce complexity, Ford Australia says it has no current plans to offer diesel and petrol versions of the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor side by side locally.

“Each market has one engine choice for Raptor and Australia opted for the twin-turbo V6 petrol,” said Ian Foston, the global chief engineer for the Ford Ranger.

“With the fuel efficiency gains we’ve made with that engine and the 10-speed gearbox, it offers outstanding performance overall.”

When asked why Ford had not opted to develop a 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 version of the Ranger Raptor, Ford engineers said it was to reduce complexity.

In other regions, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor will be equipped with the revised twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine paired to a 10-speed automatic.

In Australia, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor will, for now, be offered exclusively with a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine paired to a 10-speed automatic.

That could change if fuel prices don’t subside and Australian customers demand a choice of diesel power.

However, anyone waiting for a ‘super ute’ with the 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 may be well advised to see what Volkswagen comes up with for the new Amarok, a twin under the skin to the new Ford Ranger.

What engines will the 2023 Ford Ranger have?

2023 Ford Ranger Engine The 2023 Ford Ranger has a 2.3-liter turbo-four, outputting 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. While a diesel option is available in other countries, we probably won't see it here. This engine will combine with a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Is Ford going to put a diesel in the Ranger?

A diesel V6 adds more power, torque, and capacity to the new Ford Ranger four-wheel-drive ute. However, it won't be the most powerful in its class – for now. Ford has unveiled additional details of the next-generation 2022 Ford Ranger – including for its highly-anticipated 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine.

Is the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor diesel?

This next-generation Ford Ranger Raptor isn't going to suit everyone: petrol-only power and a lower cruising distance between refills mean this 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor is an even more pointed offering than before.

Why are there no diesel Rangers?

When asked why Ford had not opted to develop a 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 version of the Ranger Raptor, Ford engineers said it was to reduce complexity. In other regions, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor will be equipped with the revised twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine paired to a 10-speed automatic.
