What causes a laptop to turn on and then turn off again. You can turn on the laptop as normal. The LED lights on the laptop light up, but once this is done, the laptop just runs for 5 seconds and it automatically shuts off again. You can hear the fan run for a while but other that it just turns off. So what is the cause for a problem like this?

Cheers

First of all, if its doing the shutdown after booting it up from a cold state then it's definitely not an overheating issue. I'd try removing the battery first of all and try booting laptop with power supply only. If it successfully boots up and runs then I'd suspect that the battery is all but dead and not recharging properly.

Secondly, I'd open the laptop and reseat the memory dimms to make sure that it isn't just a simple disconnection. Pull out the hard drive and reseat that as well.

A bad battery is first suspect. Do you have the ability to replace the battery?

Is there a misconfigured timeout somewhere such as in the BIOS or power settings?

It could happen because of high temperatures.

Before I discovered laptop coolers, my laptop would heat a lot up to a point where it would shutdown to protect itself. If I tried to power it back up, it would shutdown immediately [like you describe].

But if not for temperature, I would definitely say motherboard, CMOS battery, bad RAM or the CPU gave out.

If you're not worried about warranty and have had experience taking laptops apart, I would open it up and check the CPU fan vents [or any other vents for that matter]. especially if the laptop has been used on a bed, carpet or anywhere else where it would suck up a lot of dirt and dust.

Other than that, as was suggested, a dead battery/faulty power supplyor a CPU/RAM issue would be the likely culprit.

Its because of high temperature or bad RAM, power supply. Can you check the things which mentioned here in your laptop?

my experience with my Laptop shutting down was due to the vents being blocked, I cleared a centimetre thick lump of dust out and after that it worked fine.

I would make sure you are comfortable taking it apart first, depending on the make and model it could be quite tricky. you will probably find a disassembly manual on the net.

Sounds like the battery. Remove the battery and fire the laptop up with just the ac cord plugged in. If it works fine, then the battery is your issue. If not, check the seating of the ram and the vents for obstructions.

It sounds like it's shuttingdown tooquickly for it to overheat. Are you getting any beep codesupon startup? Any POST indications? I would suspect RAM first...

On the occasions that I've witnessed the same issues it usually turned out to be bad RAM. Pull the RAM and see if you can power it up without it immediately shutting down [should also get the memory error tones if the laptop motherboard is capable].

I think once or twice was a shorted hard drive. [I used to own a computer sales/service shop....saw 1000's of machines over the years and this was rare]

Potential battery issue is easy to eliminate....eliminate it. Laptop should run directly off the power supply.

Make sure the power supply is actually giving it's rated output.
