Chrome Remote Desktop on the Web stuck on 'starting' for multiple users

There is this one time you might need to access a file you have on your personal computer back at home while on the road or at work. When such a time comes, Google has a handy application it calls Chrome Remote Desktop that does exactly that.

Using Chrome Remote Desktop, you can easily access the computer in your home remotely using your smartphone, tablet or even another computer at work as long as there is a reliable internet connection.

To make all the magic possible, you’ll need to link your Google account to the service and of course, set up a password for the account. Once done, the PC on which you set up the application will be able to share the screen over the Internet.

When you sign in to the same Chrome Remote Desktop account from your phone or another computer for that matter, the screen of your PC will be mirrored to the device at hand, thus literally handing you access to files miles away from you.

A pretty cool feature if you ask me, but as usual, issues are bound to pop up from time to time and apparently, such times are now facing users of the Chrome Remote Desktop service, who are reporting that the application doesn’t get beyond the “starting” stage.

I am having the same problem. It will intermittently drop connection and say I’m offline, when I’m online. Once that happens, only uninstalling seems to work. I’ve tried to re-register the host (deleting the current remote access PC, and turning it back on again). But that doesn’t work at all, and then it gets stuck on “starting”. This is very frustrating, as I have a toddler at home. We keep the keyboard and mouse put away, and using remote access has been wonderful to not have to get everything out and put it away every time (FWP, amiright?). I’m hoping for a resolution to this, BESIDES having to uninstall and reinstall every. stinking. time.

Matter of fact, this issue has been around for several months now and it’s strange that Google hasn’t picked it up and addressed it. There are hundreds of affected users in the Google support forums venting their anger at the big G, but no response up to date.

Apparently, uninstalling and re-installing Chrome Remote Desktop for Web fixes the issue for some, but for others, the solution is shortlived.

3. Now click on the option of Delete All. This will remove all saved devices which can access the computer without a pin code.

Solution 2: Granting Permissions

Another cause why the users have issues using Remote Desktop in Chrome is that not enough permissions are granted to the application. Whenever a utility or application tries to give the control of the computer to another entity, Windows automatically requires that you provide permissions.

If you haven’t seen the permissions window, it is likely that it is at the background of your current window. This was the case for several users where they accidentally ignored the window.

Solution 3: Using the Web Application

On top of a standalone Chrome application for Remote Desktop connections, Google has also launched a website which works through an extension. Even though the application is currently in a beta stage, it provides way better experience than the normal Chrome application. It has the same functionality; the only difference is the medium of the utility (a Chrome app in one case and an extension in another one). Here is the method on how to use the web application for connections.

1. Navigate to the official Chrome Remote Desktop website. Now click on the download button in the tab of Set up remote access.

2. A new window will pop up navigating you to the extensions store. Click on the Add to Chrome.

3. A small popup will open asking you for confirmation. Click on Add extension

4. After the extension is installed on your computer, navigate back to the website or click the new extension icon which will be present near your bookmarks in Chrome.
5. Now you can click on Remote Support and access your or some other computer using the same PIN terminology.

Solution 4: Reinstalling Chrome

If all the above methods are not working, we can try reinstalling Google Chrome completely. We came across some cases where the browser was not working as expected because of corrupt installation files. Make sure that you have your Google Account credentials at hand as you will be required to input them again.

1. Press Windows + R, type “appwiz.cpl” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
2. Once in the application manager, locate Google Chrome, right-click on it and select Uninstall.

3. Now press Windows + R and type “%appdata%” in the address and press Enter.
4. Once in the Application data, search for Google > Chrome. Delete the Chrome folder from the directory.

5. Now navigate to the official Google Chrome website and download the latest version to an accessible location.

6. Run the executable and install Chrome. Now try accessing the Remote Desktop utility and see if the issue is resolved.

1. Allowing Permission

For a computer to connect to another computer, the host’s computer requires permission from the user. If the permission is not granted, the user might end up facing this issue.

The window asking such permission is likely to appear while connecting to another computer. You should look for it. You can look for it in the taskbar. It might be minimised.
