Brand new Asus laptop has a dead pixel ... help!

A friend of mine bought a M5N Asus laptop from CanadaComputers 2 days ago. He found out today that there's a dead pixel in the middle of the LCD screen. I know that Asus has a min. 5 dead pixel policy, and it's considered the best in the industry ... CC refuses to help out [as usual] and tells my friend to contact Asus directly. He did and was told about the 5-pixels policy ... Is my friend out of luck? Any of you has experience with this before? Pls give some suggestion what step he shouuld take?

The dead pixel is annoyingly located right in the middle of the screen.

Thanks

It is not canada computers responsibility to perform an exchange, you can have them RMA it, just have a reference number from when you called Asus.

Here is what ASUS told me before, I don't like the the ideal of sending the laptop cross the border for service. So I did not buy an ASUS, at least I can send back a Dell within 30 days.

>>>

Thank you for your email. Regarding to your email, ASUS in North America will only provide the 5 dead pixels policy. If the ASUS notebooks has at least 2 dead pixels from the 2"x2" area in the central of the LCD display or at least to have 2 dead pixels from the 5"x5" area in the central of the LCD display or at least to have 5 dead pixels from the entire LCD display, then you will be able to qualify for returning to do the RMA service on the LCD display.

If you purchase the S5N from the Canadian resellers, then you can go to get a faster service if you go to the reseller first. Otherwise, you will be able to mail it back to our United States branch office in Northern California. So, please feel free to contact us at anytime if you have any further questions. Thank you.

Best regards,

ASUS notebooksales

My RMA'ed M6 just arrived in California

Kinda LCD problem too, Canada Computers had no problem of RMA it for me, but it'll take at least 4-6 weeks, so I figured I'll send it myself [2 weeks]
Also CC mentioned that if you get a RMA # from ASUS, you can't go through CC anymore b/c they give ASUS to their suppliers to do the RMA [which will be different # to yours]

So I guess my friend is **it out of luck because there's only 1 dead pixel then. But it's kinda bothering to think that you've spent over $1400 for a faulty machine. Oh well, I dont know what I would do if I'm in his shoes. ..

Dead pixels are a fact of life....if one is scared of getting them, then buy from a retailer that allows returns, no questions asked. Futureshop or Best Buy is your friend. Or companies like Dell.

Your friend is basically out of luck. He should have known the risk, and he took a gamble.

Personally I don't let dead pixels bother me [much].

Also, dead pixels can appear over time. So even if you have none now, there is no guarantee six months from now.

Just say you've got a dead pixel and your LCD is dim. I just got an IBM and that's what I did. Got mine fixed next business day [the EPP boxing week special came with on-site next day service, though the first technician was an idiot and I had to wait for the second technician to finish off the repair]. I even got an extra LCD cover kit which will be going on ebay.

Don't give this guy bad information, IBM != ASUS.
IBM's return policy might have been one reason why they lost millions [billions] in the PC industry.

Nah .... I dont think there's anything my friend could do about it ... It's just his damn luck. Here's the Asus policy:

---------------------------------------
Asus Industry Standard Dead Pixel Policy

ASUS's warranty obligations are limited to the terms set forth below:

ASUS PROVIDE THE HIGHEST INDUSTRY STANDARD DEAD PIXEL POLICY

ASUS provide the highest industry standard dead pixel policy which is batter than DELL, HP, SONY, Compaq , Gateway and etc. ASUS is not the LCD manufacturer. [Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung, etc. do]. The industry standard dead pixel policy is defined by LCD manufacturer.

NON-CONFORMING PIXEL CRITERIA - AS PER ASUS SPECIFICATION:

Pixel Table Abnormal Pixels Allowed Descriptions

Zone A 2 Within Centre of Screen 2" X 2"
Zone B 3 Remaining area of the LCD
Zone A & B 5 Entire Screen

Abnormal Pixel:
Definition of abnormal pixels: pixels [dots] on the screen that appear white, green, red, blue, and/or black. The pixel criteria define two Zones. Zone A is defined as a 2" x 2" square in the center of the LCD screen. Zone B is defined as the remaining area of the LCD.

Criteria for new units: Asus will consider the LCD defective if:

1. Three or more abnormal pixels appear in Zone A, or
2. Four or more abnormal pixels appear in Zone B, or
3. Six or more abnormal pixels appear on the entire screen.

------------------------------------

I wish he would ask me first before buying the laptop. At least, I could address him about the dead pixel policy and direct him to some other stores that have better warranty than CC. On a second thought, it would be nice if 2,3 more defect pixels turned up on the LCD so my friend could cry "defected" ..
